At the start of the new millennium, Amnesty International wanted to bring the scourge of torture to the attention of the world.
In Canada, longtime radio pals Mike Tennant, Mike Occomore, Larry MacInnis and Terry O'Reilly formed The Pro Bono Group and pitched in to help.
Since the success of that first campaign 25 years ago, we have donated our writing, directing and production skills — and called upon the generosity of our many contacts in Canada and abroad — to help those who need help the most.
Currently, The Pro Bono Group has radio PSAs airing for The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness, Feed Ontario, and hundreds of food banks in towns and cities across Canada.

You’ve heard his voice a gazillion times. Ok, maybe just a million. But he's everywhere. Whether it’s the main network voice for CBC Television, on a commercial for Lotto 649, or one of the many voices on cartoons such as Get Ed, Ying Yang Yo, Ned’s Newt, Jo-Jo’s Circus, Care Bears, Fisher Price’s Little People, Bob and Margaret, the X-Men, Braceface, the Avengers or Rescue Heroes. Even if you’ve never seen Tony Daniels, you’ve certainly heard Tony Daniels.
Born in Toronto, Daniels started entertaining at age 11 as a talented guitar player and singer with several musical acts throughout Southern Ontario. While playing a local show, legendary 1050 CHUM disc jockey, Tom Rivers, discovered Tony and invited him to the studios. Tony immediately fell in love with radio. It was years later, at Toronto’s Q107, that someone discovered Tony had a nearly unlimited voice range. Eventually that led to contributing as a “Voice Guy” on legendary Toronto radio morning shows such as CHUMFM’s Roger, Rick and Marilyn, Q107’s Jesse and Gene Show, Brother Jake’s Q Morning Zoo and even a stint with Howard Stern in New York.
Daniels has another rare talent: He uses his keen ear to voice-match for major Hollywood stars. Picture James Earl Jones coming to Toronto to voice a major national radio campaign.
After Jones returns to the U.S., the client urgently needs to change the ad. But Jones is unavailable. So, they bring in Tony Daniels to imitate the star. Perfectly. That actually happened. And Tony has been voice-matching A list actors ever since.
Getting set to work with these two wonderful actors, Kiff VandenHeuvel (left) and Ben Turner Dixon, on a pair of new PSAs for the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness. Kiff's film credits include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Nightcrawler and La La Land.
Ben has worked on countless feature films, animated projects and video games- and has the keen ability to voice-match for actors like Ryan Reynolds, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt, when producers are in a pinch.
Bob Bainborough, centre, is an actor/comedian known for playing the role of Dalton Humphrey in the comedy series The Red Green Show, and appearances on History Bites. He was nominated for a Gemini Award in both series.
This is not the first time Bob has helped out The Pro Bono Group. He appeared in our Amnesty International PSA titled "Torture" over 20 years ago. In September 2024, Bob drove two and a half hours just to record his lines and be part of our "Pro Radio Project". Thank you, Bob.
Our 2023 award-winning PSA campaign for Canadian Food Banks would not have been possible without the wonderful performances by these six individuals. Clockwise from top left: Dominic Catrambone, Nicole Balick-Karrer, Elenna Stauiffer, Lindsey Alena, Marie Westbrook and Zac Fine. You can listen to their powerful work in our archives. Look for "Pretend", "For Anyone", "Heart" and "Not Retail". Special thank you to Jason Marks Talent Management.
Canadian actress and former television host, Camilla Scott, came out of (acting) retirement today to play an important lead role in The Pro Bono Group's Pro Radio Project. She's worked with us before on campaigns for The Stephen Lewis Foundation and the Canadian Red Cross. Here she's in the booth at Toronto's Wanted! Sound. What a talent.
We can't say enough about Wanted! Sound's Jeff Styga, our World-Renowned Audio Engineer extraordinaire! When he's not putting up with The Pro Bono Group, Jeff spends a lot of time getting the sound mix just right on the wildly popular Dora the Explorer series.
A veteran of Toronto comedy stages, Paul Bates got his start at The Second City, where he wrote and performed in six revues. Tons of stage and screen appearances too. We were glad to have him lend his voice to a Pro Radio Project PSA titled "Winter", set to air, appropriately, in winter 2024-25. He's with The Pro Bono Group's Larry MacInnis (L) and Mike Occomore.
We were delighted to entice (at the usual Pro Bono rate of "pro bono") Noel Johansen, a Vancouver-based actor, for The Pro Radio Project. Noel has graciously offered to continue as the all-important main voice for the duration of this radio campaign. Thank you Noel.
Tracey Hoyt is not only a great voice actor, she is also a celebrated voiceover coach who worked for years coaching talent in conjunction with Pirate Studios in Toronto. So we were thrilled when Tracey agreed to lend her voice and support to The Pro Bono Group's Pro Radio Project.
Did you know: Tracey's father is the late Sandy Hoyt, legendary personality with Toronto radio stations CHFI and CFTR.

Tony Daniels is a genius voice actor, chameleon-like with his many impressions and characters. You could hear him on back-to-back commercials - and not even realize it's him voicing both. The Pro Bono Group was excited to have Tony work with us again, this time for The Pro Radio Project. He can also be heard on our campaign for the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness.
